Comment from Ilaria:
“My favourite spot - the view from the Ardnamurchan Lighthouse!"
Comment from Yolanda:
“This woodcut is inspired by an encounter I had last September while out kayaking on my doorstep in Shetland. I and a friend spent over an hour with this humpback whale and the bait ball of small fish surrounding us.
"Just as we were about to leave, the humpback surfaced about 10m from my kayak, swimming towards me. The humpback is one of my spirit animals and is tattooed on my left ankle so I felt very connected to it. It was actually the second humpback we came across that day but this one stayed around for ages.”
Comment from guest judge Paul Bloomer, Arts Lecturer at Shetland College UHI:
“A close up rare and precious encounter between a person in a canoe and a whale. Shown from a birds-eye view from above the person and whale dance in a sea of bubbles in an encounter that will change at least one of them forever.”
Comment from Rozaliya:
“This turtle is mostly underwater and the part of its shell that is not is an island. Thank you for doing these weekly prompts! This is the most that I have drawn in a year and I am really happy that I got to practice my watercolour skills."
Comment from guest judge Anne Bevan, arts lecturer at Orkney College UHI:
“This is a really bold, yet beautifully delicate image. It plays with our imaginations and sense of scale while also sending a powerful message about the vulnerability of coastal waters and marine life.”
Comment from Roxane Permar, Professor in Art and Social Practice at Shetland College UHI
"The winning picture not only demonstrates exceptional skill in handling watercolour, but reveals Monica Martin Jerez's ability to use the medium very sensitively. The portrait conveys deep feeling as well as imagination. Congratulations to Monica and to all the participants. I've enjoyed seeing everyone's work very much, and I wish them every success with their future studies and careers."
