Breaking the Silence Together: Conversations on the 16 Days of Activism within Families

The 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence is an annual global campaign starting on November 25th, recognised as the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, and culminating on December 10th, known as International Human Rights Day. For students who are also parents or those who wish to involve their families in this critical movement, starting conversations can be a powerful way to raise awareness and contribute to the cause of positive change. We hope this resource can guide student parents and other students in engaging their families, including grandparents, children, and siblings, in meaningful discussions about the 16 Days of Activism.

Understanding the Cause:

To start participating in the 16 Days of Activism, it is important to educate yourself about the campaign and the issues it addresses. Gender-based violence affects individuals of all ages and backgrounds, and gaining an understanding of the significance of this campaign will provide a solid foundation for discussing it with your family.

Choose the Right Time and Place:

When discussing sensitive topics, choose a quiet and comfortable setting with no distractions. Consider family meals or gatherings when everyone is present and engaged.

Start with Personal Stories:

If you want to create an environment where family members feel comfortable sharing their feelings about gender-based violence, consider sharing your own stories or experiences about the issue. This approach can bring a personal touch to the conversation and help humanise the problem, making it more relatable.

Highlight the Impact on Different Generations:

Gender-based violence can have a profound impact on individuals of all ages, including grandparents, parents, and children. Recognising that creating a safer and more equitable world for future generations is a shared responsibility is important. We must encourage family members to reflect on their experiences and consider how they can contribute to positive change. By working together, we can make a difference and help prevent gender-based violence from perpetuating.

Utilise Multimedia Resources:

Incorporate multimedia resources such as videos, documentaries, or articles to provide a broader perspective on the issue. Visual aids can be powerful tools to convey the severity of gender-based violence and inspire empathy and understanding.

Encourage Open Dialogue:

It's important to establish a safe environment for open dialogue within the family by actively listening to all perspectives. It's crucial to acknowledge that everyone may have different views and experiences and to create an environment where questions and discussions are welcome. This approach encourages mutual respect and understanding, fostering a healthy and supportive family dynamic.

Propose Family Initiatives:

Here are some suggestions on how families can participate in the 16 Days of Activism together. You can attend local events, volunteer in your community, or share information on social media. Engaging as a family unit can amplify the impact of your collective voice and actions.

Conversations with family members about the 16 Days of Activism can be a powerful way to promote awareness and understanding. By approaching the topic with empathy, sharing personal stories, and being committed to open dialogue, students can encourage their families to take part in the global movement against gender-based violence. Through collective efforts, families can help create a more equitable and safer world for everyone.
